Google to skip April Fools’ Day pranks amid coronavirus

Google to skip April Fools’ Day pranks amid coronavirus

Google will skip its annual tradition of April Fools’ Day jokes and pranks amid the coronavirus pandemic, the company confirmed on Tuesday

Chief Marketing Officer Lorraine Twohill said in an internal email obtained by Business Insider that the tech giant would not share April Fools’ jokes across its platforms, as it normally does every year.

Google officials made the decision as a show of respect to those fighting the virus and to live up to their vow to provide a helpful resource for accurate information during the pandemic, Twohill wrote.

The company has halted any plans by Google’s centralized marketing team managers but wanted to ensure all managers were aware that smaller April Fools’ Day initiatives should not be carried out, Forbes reported.

Twohill reportedly wrote that the tradition will most likely return in 2021.

A Google spokesperson told The Hill that the company would have no further comment. The tech company was one of the first in the industry to promote pranking internet users on April Fools’ Day, which falls on Wednesday this year.

Worldwide, more than 803,300 people have contracted coronavirus, leading to more than 39,000 deaths. A total of 172,657 people have recovered, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

UFC fighter Jon Jones has been arrested for a suspected Driving while intoxicated

UFC fighter Jon Jones has been arrested for a suspected Driving while intoxicated

UFC fighter Jon "Bones" Jones, best known for being the current UFC light heavyweight champion, was arrested Thursday morning in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a suspected Driving While Intoxicated charge.

An Albuquerque Police Department officer pulled up behind Jones' car after hearing a gunshot in the area at around 1 a.m., according to police records. The officer found a quarter-full open bottle of alcohol in the car, the report said.
The reporting officer also found a loaded handgun beneath the driver's seat and a spent bullet casing in and around the vehicle, according to the report.

"As part of the investigation into this incident, our Gun Violence Reduction Unit will test the firearm and bullet casing to determine whether the gun has been used in any crimes," said Gilbert Gallegos, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department. "Reducing gun violence in Albuquerque is our top priority."
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has been made aware of the situation, the organization told CNN in a statement. It has been in contact with Jones' management team and "is currently gathering additional information," it said.
Jones' management team did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

This isn't the first time Jones has run into issues with the police. In 2015, Jones was stripped of his light heavyweight title and suspended indefinitely from the UFC after he plead guilty to a hit-and-run, for which he was put on probation. He was reinstated to the UFC later that year.
Last year, he was charged with battery after allegedly assaulting a cocktail waitress in a strip club, slapping her in her genital area and putting her in a chokehold. He took a plea deal in October.

Stimulus package 2020

Senate to vote Wednesday on $2 trillion coronavirus bill after landmark agreement with White House
The Senate plans to vote Wednesday afternoon on a $2 trillion stimulus package that is designed to flood the U.S. economy with money in an effort to stabilize households and businesses that have been floored by the coronavirus outbreak.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced the breakthrough on the Senate floor around 1:30 a.m., after a long day of talks with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and other administration officials. Senate leaders plan to vote on the bill later Wednesday, though aides were still scrambling to write it. “This is a very important bipartisan piece of legislation that is going to be very important to help American workers, American business and people across America,” Mnuchin told reporters early Wednesday morning. “We couldn’t be more pleased.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) gave an upbeat assessment of the bill early Wednesday, but the logistics of the legislation’s passage through the House remain unclear. The House could likely vote as soon as Thursday on the measure, but New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was demanding changes on Wednesday and it appeared it was taking lawmakers longer than expected to release the final text. Nearly half of the country’s 55,000 cases are in New York, and the health care system around New York City is completely overwhelmed.

Cuomo said the bill would be “terrible” for his state and added that “We need the House to make adjustments.”

The Senate bill, unprecedented in its size and scope, would send $1,200 checks to many Americans, create a $367 billion loan program for small businesses, and establish a $500 billion lending fund for industries, cities and states.

Mind Uploading

Whole brain emulation (WBE), mind upload or brain upload (sometimes called "mind copying" or "mind transfer") is the hypothetical futuristic process of scanning the mental state (including long-term memory and "self") of a particular brain substrate and copying it to a computer. The computer could then run a simulation model of the brain's information processing, such that it would respond in essentially the same way as the original brain (i.e., indistinguishable from the brain for all relevant purposes) and experience having a conscious mind.

Substantial mainstream research in related areas is being conducted in animal brain mapping and simulation, development of faster supercomputers, virtual reality, brain–computer interfaces, connectomics and information extraction from dynamically functioning brains. According to supporters, many of the tools and ideas needed to achieve mind uploading already exist or are currently under active development; however, they will admit that others are, as yet, very speculative, but still in the realm of engineering possibility. Neuroscientist Randal Koene has formed a nonprofit organization called Carbon Copies to promote mind uploading research.

Mind uploading may potentially be accomplished by either of two methods: Copy-and-transfer or gradual replacement of neurons. In the case of the former method, mind uploading would be achieved by scanning and mapping the salient features of a biological brain, and then by copying, transferring, and storing that information state into a computer system or another computational device. The biological brain may not survive the copying process. The simulated mind could be within a virtual reality or simulated world, supported by an anatomic 3D body simulation model. Alternatively the simulated mind could reside in a computer inside (or connected to) a (not necessarily humanoid) robot or a biological body.

Man dies of hantavirus in China: Report

Man dies of hantavirus in China: Report

As the coronavirus pandemic slows down in China, one person has died in the country from hantavirus, another infectious disease, local media reported on Tuesday.

Chinese daily The Global Times said a person from southwestern Yunnan province passed away after contracting the virus.

"A person from Yunnan Province died while on his way back to Shandong Province for work on a chartered bus on Monday," the newspaper tweeted.

It added that 32 fellow passengers on the bus had also been tested. Information on their test results was not provided.

The viral disease was first reported in the U.S. in 1993. It is transmitted to humans by rodents such as mice and rats.

No human-to-human transmission of this virus has been found except for Argentina in 1996 when it was suggested that “strains of hantaviruses in South America may be transmissible from person to person,” according to U.S.-based center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The development comes at a time when the world is battling coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

COVID-19 has killed more than 17,000 people in 169 countries or territories to date.

Unlike coronavirus, whose symptoms include cough, fever and breathing difficulties, hantavirus in the body leads to fatigue and muscle aches, as well as headaches.

Olympic teams and athletes want the 2020 games postponed

Olympic teams and athletes want the 2020 games postponed
Olympic teams and athletes have said that they want the 2020 Olympics to be postponed in light of the coronavirus pandemic that has killed thousands of people across the world.

USA Gymnastics, USA Swimming, and USA Track and Field all issued statements saying the teams want to postpone the 2020 games and a majority of Olympic athletes who responded to a survey agree.
The 2020 Olympic games are scheduled to kick off July 24 in Tokyo.
But due to the international health crisis, many athletes who responded to a survey sent by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said they can't safely train and would support a postponement of the event.
The survey was sent to approximately 4,000 US athlete hopefuls for the Olympic and Paralympic games. More than 1,700 athletes responded, the USOPC said in a statement Monday. Nearly 65% of athletes reported their training was severely impacted or they couldn't train at all, the statement said. 25% said they could not train at all.
93% of athletes who responded to the survey said they would prefer to postpone the games over canceling them while 7% said they would rather the games be canceled and compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, according to the statement.

Don't believe anything that Donald Trump says and rely on doctors

'Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure': Woman whose husband died after ingesting chloroquine warns the public not to 'believe anything that the president says'

The wife of an Arizona man who died after ingesting chloroquine phosphate to protect himself from the coronavirus warned the public on Monday not to "believe anything that the president says" and rely on doctors instead.

"We saw Trump on TV — every channel — and all of his buddies and that this was safe," the woman, who is in critical care after taking the drug with her husband, told NBC News' Vaughn Hillyard. "Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure."
The president has repeatedly touted chloroquine as a "very powerful" treatment against coronavirus and falsely claimed it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Asked what her message is to the public after what she and her husband went through, the woman told NBC News, "Oh my God, don't take anything. Don't believe anything that the president says and his people ... call your doctor."

Coronavirus: Jordan begins nationwide curfew for 10m citizens

Air-raid sirens echoed across Amman early on Saturday to mark the start of a nationwide curfewaffecting 10 million Jordanian citizens to combat the spread of coronavirus.

In one of the strictest measures yet, Jordan has ordered all shops to close and all people to stay off the streets until at least Tuesday, when it plans to announce specific times for shopping. The army said anyone violating the curfew, which restricts movement beyond emergencies and essential services, could be jailed for up to a year.

Country Music Legend Kenny Rogers Dies At 81

Country Music Legend Kenny Rogers Dies At 81

Country music icon Kenny Rogers, whose hits included "Lucille," "Lady" and "The Gambler," died late Friday at his home in Sandy Springs, Ga., his family said in a statement. He was 81.

The Houston-born country star had 20 No.-1 hits and three Grammys and performed for some 60 years before retiring from touring in 2017 at age 79, according to the Associated Press.

Rogers didn't write most of his hits and often said he didn't consider himself much of a songwriter. But he told NPR in 2012 that he had a knack for picking songs that could draw in the listener.

"I've always felt great songs put you in a spot, put you in a place — on a warm summer's evening, on a train bound for nowhere," he said. "You know where you are, and from there the rest of the song plays out."

"The Gambler" would become a worldwide hit in 1978 and turn into Rogers' calling card. He always joked, however, that he wasn't much of a gambler himself.

"I learned a long time ago, I can't win enough money to excite me, but I can lose enough to depress me," he said told NPR's Rachel Martin 2015. "So I don't gamble. But you're right, it's been a career-identifying song."

Doctor Li aged 34 Warned, died of Coronavirus. Chinese Government apologized

Chinese Government apologized after the death of Li Wenliang, a Wuhan doctor who had tried to raise the alarm about the virus, officially known as Covid-19, only to be reprimanded by police. Li aged 34 passed away in hospital from the virus, after belatedly being praised by Chinese authorities. Following his death, hundreds of thousands of people posted demands for free speech online -- that were themselves quickly scrubbed by the censors.

Dr Li was apprehended by Wuhan police for "spreading rumours" about the coronavirus outbreak earlier last month.
Now Chinese Government apologized with the family of Doctor Li after his death. If govt had listened him, corona virus would be controlled at earlier stages and world saved from crises.

U.S. volunteer receives first shot of experimental coronavirus vaccine

U.S. volunteer receives first shot of experimental coronavirus vaccine

A healthy U.S. volunteer received the first dose of an experimental coronavirus vaccine, a potential defense against the virus if it becomes a long-term threat.

Where it stands: The trial will ultimately give 45 volunteers two doses about 28 days apart in order to test the vaccine's effectiveness in protecting the subjects against COVID-19. If successful, several more trials with larger subject groups will be needed to prove whether there are common side effects.

Context: The vaccine candidate, code-named mRNA-1273, was developed by the National Institutes of Health and Massachusetts-based biotechnology company Moderna Inc.

Several other vaccines from researchers and companies around the world are in development.
What to watch: Even if the trial is successful, a vaccine for mass production and distribution worldwide will likely not be available for 12–18 months, said Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Philippines detects bird flu outbreak in quail farm

The Philippines has detected an outbreak of avian flu in a northern province after tests showed presence of the highly infectious H5N6 subtype of the influenza A virus in a quail farm, the country’s farm minister said on Monday.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar said the bird flu virus, the same strain that hit some local poultry farms in 2017, was detected in Jaen municipality in Nueva Ecija province, where about 1,500 quails had died on one farm alone.

A total of 12,000 quails have been destroyed and buried to prevent further infections, Dar said, citing field reports.

“We are on top of the situation,” he said. “Surveillance around the 1-km and 7-km radius will be carried out immediately to ensure that the disease has not progressed around the said perimeter.”

Animal quarantine checkpoints have also been set up to restrict the movement of all live domestic birds to and from the quarantine area, he said.

A ban on large public gatherings will commence on Monday as schools across the country prepare for the possibility they too could be shut down.

Some schools in Australia are taking matters into their own hands and planning to teach their students remotely, and Health Minister Greg Hunt said a formal directive on closing schools is an option that may be considered down the track.

"When we are looking forward over the course of the next six months we are, rightly, keeping all options on the table," he said.

Trump declares emergency and says he was tested for coronavirus and results will take 'a day, or two days'

Trump declares emergency and says he was tested for coronavirus and results will take 'a day, or two days'

Washington(CNN)President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he has been tested for coronavirus after coming into recent contact with two individuals who have tested positive for the virus.

During a news conference Saturday, Trump said he was tested Friday night and that he had his temperature taken Saturday before entering the White House briefing room. The President told reporters that his temperature was normal.

The White House physician had previously said in a memo that the President "remains without symptoms, testing for COVID-19 is not currently indicated."

Canada hit with crises two ways

Canada, of course, has been hit two ways. Aside from the infections, one death and rapidly multiplying postponements and cancellations, there has been extraordinary turmoil in financial markets. And the already sickly oil industry was pummeled by price drops that were intensified because of a coincident feud between Saudi Arabia and Russia.

It was an extraordinary day here in Ottawa on Friday. First, the House of Commons voted unanimously to suspend its session until April 20. Then, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held an outdoor news conference in front of his official residence, with journalists kept at a distance. After his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, tested positive for coronavirus, Mr. Trudeau, who said he is in full health, has voluntarily isolated himself for two weeks.

Pi Day

Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (3/14 in the month/day format) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day.

In 1988, the earliest known official or large-scale celebration of Pi Day was organized by Larry Shaw at the San Francisco Exploratorium, where Shaw worked as a physicist, with staff and public marching around one of its circular spaces, then consuming fruit pies. The Exploratorium continues to hold Pi Day celebrations.

Larry Shaw, the organizer of the first Pi Day celebration at the Exploratorium in San Francisco

On March 12, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution (111 H. Res. 224), recognizing March 14, 2009 as National Pi Day. For Pi Day 2010, Google presented a Google Doodle celebrating the holiday, with the word Google laid over images of circles and pi symbols; and for the 30th anniversary in 2018, it was a Dominique Ansel pie with the circumference divided by its diameter.

The entire month of March 2014 (3/14) was observed by some as "Pi Month". In the year 2015, March 14 was celebrated as "Super Pi Day". It had special significance, as the date is written as 3/14/15 in month/day/year format. At 9:26:53, the date and time together represented the first 10 digits of π.

Harvard campus moved to online courses due to Coronavirus

All Harvard courses will move to remote instruction beginning March 23 as a result of a growing global coronavirus outbreak, University President Lawrence S. Bacow announced in an email Tuesday morning. The University will also ask students not to return from spring break.

"Students are asked not to return to campus after Spring Recess and to meet academic requirements remotely until further notice," Bacow wrote. "Students who need to remain on campus will also receive instruction remotely and must prepare for severely limited on-campus activities and interactions. All graduate students will transition to remote work wherever possible."

The move follows both similar decisions at other Ivy League universities in recent days and rapid changes on campus. As the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Massachusetts rises, events and venues have closed, travel restrictions have tightened, and University affiliates have questioned how the disease will affect life and work on campus. Harvard has seen similarly seismic changes to operations only in wartime.

Spring recess officially begins this Saturday and concludes on March 22. The next day, students will attend classes virtually — a possibility Harvard University Health Services director Giang T. Nguyen and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Claudine Gay first raised at a faculty meeting earlier this month. Since then, tabs for the online meeting platform Zoom have popped up on course websites and many faculty have tested it with their classes.

Bacow wrote Monday that Harvard will now strongly discourage gatherings of more than 25 people, a change from the previous guidance to rethink events of 100 or more.

Universities from California to New York have closed

Universities from California to New York have closed campus classrooms as the novel coronavirus has affected more than 100,000 people worldwide and its spread has transformed into what is being called a pandemic.
The cancellations have been focused in states and areas hardest hit by the virus, including the Seattle area, California and New York. The Ohio State University, which has an enrollment of more than 66,000 students, is the latest to announce it's closing its classrooms.
Schools are also issuing guidance on avoiding travel to China, Italy and South Korea as many students either are on or about to go on spring break. Some are telling students to not return to campus for 14 days after their return, depending on the laws in their state.

Historical fall in prices of Oil and it's impact on world economy

Trading on the New York Stock Exchange was halted temporarily Monday after indexes plunged 7% in reaction to Saudi Arabia's shocking oil price cut. Trading later resumed and stock indexes recovered some of their losses.
The financial market chaos comes amid increasing worries that the coronavirus epidemic will plunge the global economy into recession.
In early trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down more than 1,900 points — more than 19% off its February peak. Stocks also fell sharply in Asia and Europe.
U.S. indexes rebounded somewhat, with the Dow down about 1,600 points in early afternoon trading. Both the Dow and the broader S&P 500 stock index were down about 6%.
The price of oil also fell — down about 20% Monday following the unexpected Saudi move.
As investors fled stocks and sought relative safety in government bonds, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell below 0.4% overnight before climbing above 0.5% Monday morning.
Over the weekend, Saudi Arabia announced a stunning discount in oil prices — of $6 to $8 per barrel — and a boost in production.

Camp Style

Camp is an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value. ... Camp opposes satisfaction and seeks to challenge. Camp art is related to—and often confused with—kitsch, and things with camp appeal may also be described as "cheesy".
